I had three options of hotels or losmen that I could choose from in the Lonely Planet Book. Although Bali's north is more laid back than its south, there is still plenty to do. It's more laid-back and cheaper.

Of the three options covered, a Seminyak Villa Rental would be the most ideal for a balance of privacy, shopping, dining, spas, excitement and relaxation and yet it is still conveniently located in Bali and just a short distance from Kuta.

With art markets, dance displays, temples, quaint villages and villagers and a few good dining options Ubud is an extremely relaxed setting in which to do a whole lot of not much. It is a great place to take a break and let nature do the rest. A driver is recommended for longer stays, especially if you are looking for excitement. The travel time from Ubud and Kuta/Seminyak takes between 1.5-2 hours. So, a good option if you just want to chill. This is not the case if you're looking for a balance between adventure and relaxation or at least a chance to have both.
